You may recall the picture
opposite as the subject of our
"Guess the player
competition", and yes, it is
Lindow stalwart of many years,
Mike Abercrombie. Crombers
joined the Club way back in the
late 80's as a Social player,
featuring on the Sunday XI. In
those days Crombers hadn't got
much clue what he was doing and
was the butt of many jokes from
his team mates. Being the amiable
laid back character that he is,
he never let it bother him and
set about improving his game. It
is fair to say he has come a long
way since then, and is now a more
than capable Sunday cricketer.

Mike has
recorded a couple of Fifties and
more than a few Fivefers in his
time, and his finest hour came at
Holmes Chapel in 1996, when he
came to the crease at a tricky
stage, held the tail together,
and hit the four required to win
off the very last ball, by
dispatching their quickie
straight back over his head to
win the game. Mikes nickname is
"Buckets" for good
reason. He has one of the safest
pair of hands in the Club, and if
he drops one, it is a rarity we
can assure you. Not exactly
the noisiest or in your face type
of cricketer, Mikes quiet, laid
back style hides a quick and
sharp wit. Get a couple of beers
down him and wait for the
incisive one liners to hit home.
Doesn't miss much does our Mike,
so beware the unwary. Buckets
will get ya! Sartorially
challenged, Crombers is usually
to be observed in his designer
shell suit (circa 1988) and his
Lindow sweater, so he is easy to
identify on most days.
The
big fella is quite a keen tourist
too, having been on several
cricket tours with our good
friends at Hale Barns. No doubt
they could tell us a few
interesting tales of his exploits
in sunny Devon. Mike has also
been a long standing scorer for
the First XI so nothing that
takes place on the field of play
is nothing new to him. He has
seen it all before. You might not
know that he is a bit of a
hustler at pool having cleaned up
many an unsuspecting opponent in
the Horse & Jockey. He is
also a bit of a pop quiz
brainbox, and regularly frequents
the Unicorn on Sunday nights,
where he collects his weekly free
beer vouchers courtesy of a sharp
mind.
So
there you have it, a potted
history of Mr Buckets, Mike
Abercrombie.
