Player Profile September 2001 - Andy "Basil" Hume
Big & Daft on drinks duty This months profile features none other than the incomperable Andy Hume, or Basil to his teammates, so called after the late Cardinal Basil Hume. But a saint our Basil ain't. Big & daft Andy has pulled quite a few stunts during his time at Lindow, and we will cover these in some depths later on.

Andy is a product of the Lindow youth system, and first caught the eye of the selectors when playing for the Under 15's back in 1997. He was quickly fast tracked onto the First XI under Mike Davies' stewardship where he showed great promise as a medium paced swing bowler. His promise was also recognised by the League where he earned several caps with the Under 15 League team. His batting has never really caught the eye until of late, and Number 11 was his usual spot. Recently the willow has been swung to decent effect for the Two's where the big fella has recorded a few fifties. His early bowling promise is largely unfilled at present, probably due to the fact that he prefers hitting the batsman rather than the wooden things in the ground. Ah well, at least time is on his side.

Not the sharpest knife in the draw, our Basil has embroiled himself in some bizarre stunts. Who can forget the afternoon when Skipper Skewes asked him to water the track at tea because the opposition captain had complained that the pitch was too dry. Basil took it all in, and presently set off to the middle complete with watering can. Marvellous stuff. Fortunately someone stopped him just in time. He was also the first player to duck out of a tour, fearing somebody would shave his eyebrows off whilst he slept. No way Baz. We might shave something more sensitive off though.

Baz used to work part time for Dominoes pizza as a delivery driver until he managed to get himself mugged on Colshaw Farm. He now works for the same Company as Sally Coldwell who keeps him in check, and is working on improving his attention span, which we all know is as long as a Gnat.

Having temporarily retired from First XI Cricket during the 2001 season, due to the fact he fields like a 45 year old, Baz assures us he will be back in 2002 if the NHS can sort out his hip replacement operation in time. We've seen more mobility in a plank of wood. So there you have it, a potted history of the Cardinal himself, Andy "Basil" Hume.
